What is Hygge?

You may have come across the buzz worthy word Hygge (Hyoo-Ga) in the past few years. The Danish word translates to “simple contentment” and its basic principle might just be what we need to thrive this lonely winter. The Danish lifestyle concept asks us to be grateful and present in our daily lives while enjoying simple pleasures. The true meaning of Hygge manifests itself in our attitude but also through physical manifestations. Hygge is most clearly a state of mind but these common cozy practices bring us closer to the mentality.

Good Food and Company

The Hygge lifestyle asks us to enjoy the company of others in an uncomplicated way. Eat some good food and have a present conversation. A common suggestion to cultivate a cozy atmosphere is to either cook the meal yourself or with your company. Putting effort and personal care into a meal will contribute to your gratitude for the moment. Also, Danes do not shy away from a decadent desert or a comfort meal. In the cold winter months, they love to incorporate hot meals and drinks. Comfort is key.

A Fire/Candle

Cozying up by a fire with your loved ones is a perfect way to practice Hygge. The good vibes emulated by a warm fire and comfy chair will melt away any winter woes. Candles are another way to enjoy warm lighting if you don’t have a fireplace. Lighting a few candles and turning off harsh lights will instantly transform a space into a warm hideaway. Taking the time to enjoy the simple pleasure of a flame can help you feel centered and joyful in the darkest time of the year. Instead of focusing on the cold weather notice the perfect atmosphere for a candlelit cup of tea.

Simple Cozy Items

The Hygge lifestyle promotes us to spend our money on good blankets, sweaters, and socks. There is nothing better in a snowstorm than to put on a luxurious pair of socks. Instead of just being content in your purchases, take it one step further and order yourself an extravagant version of you normally would. It might seem ridiculous to spend your money on a well-made blanket or pair of socks however the joy they will bring you will be worth it in the end.

A Good Story

Indulging in your favorite book or movie is a perfect way to enact Hygge. If it’s too cold to go outside, enjoy the indoors and a free afternoon of stories. Watch an old favorite or a new blockbuster or crack open a book you’ve been waiting to read. Putting away your phone and focusing on one form of entertainment will bring you further into the moment.

The topic of Hygge is extensive and well researched in Denmark. Books are written on the topic and its studied at Universities. Trying on a unique culture of happiness could be just the shake up we need this winter. I hope everyone has a Hygge filled day!
