Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Purchase

In a world covered in advertisements, purchasing that new special item makes us feel great. Especially with the holidays approaching a rise our inclination to shop feels inevitable. When we are on the road to a purchase rarely do we consider how the item will make us feel beyond that specific moment. Taking the time to consider the following questions will help be conscious consumers.

The Rule of Three

This rule goes by many names, but it always makes the same point. Will I want this item in three days? Three weeks? Three months? Three years? This question can get you thinking about the longevity of a purchase and the intention behind it. Asking this question about purchases of all sizes is incredibly useful. Whether you are buying paper plates or a new handbag it can be applied. Considering not only the use of the product but also your willingness to use it.

Can I afford it?

This question is simple, but it asks us to consider much more than just our bank accounts. The monetary value of an item is usually the first thing we consider before a purchase. Keeping our finances in mind should be one of the biggest factors of decision making. Going beyond money, ask yourself if your space can afford it. Ask yourself if your life can afford it. If the item is just going to add to clutter or perpetuate an unhealthy lifestyle it might be time to put it back on the shelf.

What is the value?

Beyond a technical use its important to ask yourself the value of an item. Advertising often associate a positive feeling alongside a new product. Taking the time to consider the true value of the item in your life could save you from unnecessary purchases. Be honest with yourself about your intentions. If the purchase is just to make you feel good, weigh your options. Everyone needs some retail therapy now and again but keeping that habit in check is key.

Does it work with other things I own?

Whether you are buying furniture, clothing, household items or anything in between, ask yourself if it works in your life. The most common consideration of this question is with clothing purchases. Thinking about a new item meshing with the rest of your wardrobe is an important step. Taking this up one level we should ask ourselves this question with daily items and how they fit strategically into our routine.

I hope this article encourages you to be a thoughtful consumer! Asking questions of yourself is a great way to grow forward on your organizing journey.
