Organize for the Seasons : Summer to Fall

Now that the weather is starting to cool down, we have less use for our bathing suits, beach towels and summer beach books. While we might still want to hold onto our sunny days, now is a great time to start decluttering those summer items hanging around your home. Seasonal organization is a very simple way to declutter without getting rid of anything. Something as easy as a plastic bin in a closet can transform your home from disorganized to minimal haven. Hopefully, these quick tips can get the ball rolling!

Summer Fun Declutter

One of the easiest things you can do to organize for the season is to gather up all your summer items. Right now, we are in the furthest month in the year to swimming pools opening back up. Take all those bathing suits, flip flops, pool accessories and other summer specific items and place them in a bin. This will get them out of sight and out of mind.

Coats and Boots Mania

When winter is over, normally heavy coats are pushed to the back of the closet. It’s not usually a conscious decision of when your jacket stops getting used. When the world heats up, we just stop wearing it. This can mean that we might not remember the wear and tear our coats and boots endured during that last wintery season. Pull out all for your winter accessories and assess the damage. If the item can be salvaged keep it but if it has seen its last season it can be donated or passed on to someone else.

Create a System

Designate a spot in your home for seasonal items to live. Having an easily accessible location will make the change-over a lot easier! When you’re ready to put away your summer items, just pull out all your winter gear from that storage space and make the switch. With system in place when a season change happens it will be a no-brainer to stay organized.

Access Your “Gear”

Most of the time seasonal gear, apparel or equipment is linked to an experience. You hang onto things like beach chairs, ski equipment or roller blades because in your head you’ll use it when the weather changes. Its important to ask yourself if those activities are actually happening. If you haven’t been roller blading in four years, it might be time to say goodbye to your skates.
Seasonal items in our home can be long forgotten. That’s why it is good to remind yourself of what you own. Taking inventory of our possessions can help us use them more efficiently and spend our time on the things we love.
