Lessons from "Sparking Joy" on Netflix

marie Kondo’s advice

In August Marie Kondo’s new show Sparking Joy began streaming on Netflix. The series released on August 31st , including three 40-minute episodes that cover topics of Family, Balance and Letting Go.

The show explores each theme throughout the entirety of one episode. The first covers the story of a local plant shop run by father and son, Jimmy, and Logan, exploring how organization can play a large role in the way we use our time for joy (and family). Here is what we learned from Episode 1:

1. Organization is Vital for Business

The episode starts off by Jimmy explaining their organizing system for the outdoor flower shop. He details that he knows where everything “in his head” (a system many of us use in our private spaces).

While this tactic has been working at a minimum for their shop, employees and son Logan point out that they often struggle to keep up. Realizing this, the team spends time with Kondo to work through a new method.

This was a perfect example of how personal organizing systems might work well for you. but streamlining at work will help your business run smooth. This is especially important when building string communication skills in a group.

2. Slow Down

Kondo came to their shop for the first day and they only decluttered two boxes. Other organizers may hustle through the decluttering process due to time limits. However, Kondo takes a more deliberate and meticulous approach.

She really believes in offering gratitude to the items in our home. While the slowed process may be anxiety inducing to those of us who like to get things done swiftly, Kondo’s process offers a sense of care for the items that stayed.

3. Decluttering Can Strengthen Relationships

One of the most striking moments in the show is when Jimmy and Logan are going through a box of old books. Jimmy finds a seed guide for roses that immediately lights up a smile. Kondo inquires further into his love for roses, and he replies with a story about his grandmother. His son Logan is taken aback, met with a new understanding of his father. This sweet moment perfect for television illustrated the beauty of a slower paced declutter.

Kondo’s new show explores themes outside of just decluttering our closets. She opens the series explaining that she’d been exploring the ways of Sparking Joy in other aspects of her life beside the home. Organizing can be a part of so much of our lives and it offers care not only to ourselves but those around us, allowing for more time for things that are truly joyful.
