How to Organize Your Closet with "Tough Love"

Wow, has it been a crazy year! I think everyone can agree with that sentiment. With many companies and schools opting for at-home work many of us neglected our closets.

Why clean something out if its barley used?  That is how I have felt in this year of pajamas.

However now that the world is opening up our closets are as well. Trends have changed and so have we, but what about our clothes? With fall looming around the corner, it might be the perfect time to organize your closet with some “tough love”. Here are five tough love practices that will get your closet into fighting shape:

1. Pull Everything Out

The Marie Kondo method asks us to pull everything out of its place into one big pile. This way our brain can’t hang onto things in specific categories. Also, if all of your clothes are in a big pile its more difficult to put off the tough decisions.

Once your clothes are in the pile, go through them item by item to determine what to do with it. Marie Kondo asks us to wonder if the item sparks joy.

2. Ask Yourself "Does it fit?"

The next question you should ask yourself when tossing an item is: “does it fit?” This can be in multiple ways:

Does it fit your body?

Does it fit your style?

Does it fit your lifestyle?

These questions are tough and force us to face the practicality of owning certain pieces. A lot of times we hold onto things for years that just don’t fit in our lives.

3. Separate

Once you have asked yourself the tough questions, it is time to make piles. Separate your piles into the categories of what you will do with the item. This can be a pile for:

Tossing

Donation

Resale

Hand-me-downs

Storage

Keeps

Whatever pile it ends up in make sure you have a concrete solution and execution plan to take it out of your home.

4. Find Storage Space

Decluttering is not always the correct answer to opening up essential closet space. Seasonal items and special occasion pieces should be saved! Look around for storage space in your home and assess where your clothes will:

a.) keep the best & b.) stay out of the way.

5. Organize

Now that your closet is decluttered, it’s time to organize the actual closet. Move items that are used less to high shelves and find a system that works for you. Combine similar items by type, color, size, or occasion. This is honestly the fun part. Don’t be afraid to use your creativity!
