Four Surprising Reasons Why Your Home is Still Cluttered

it’s not what you think

Okay, so you have decluttered and for some reason your home still doesn’t look right. This can happen to the best of us! Clutter is sometimes hard to pinpoint and that is why we love the Konmari Method because it helps us really see what we have hiding in our home. While you might have taken the time to declutter there are still so many factors that go into a cluttered space. Here are five surprising reasons why your home is still cluttered:

1. Sentimental Hang-Ups

We love to discuss the process of getting rid of sentimental items at Avance. Because it is truly one of the most common reasons people hang onto things they don’t use. The list includes:

-furniture

-tchotchkes

– clothes

– shoes

– décor

-art

-children’s toys

-gifts

And so much more!! Really assess why you are holding onto an item and decide whether it is adding real value to your life or space. While getting rid of these things completely is not always the best answer, maybe compiling it into a memory box will get some of it out of everyday sight.

2. Unfinished Projects

Garages, living rooms and kitchens are the perfect place for hidden projects. When life, work and school kick up many unfinished plans get put on the back burner. If you have a decluttering project that is unfinished, please, just remove the donation bag from your home anyway.

Also evaluate what projects (broken appliances, torn clothing, a half-finished DIY item) are worth keeping. Sometimes it’s a great option to mend broken possessions but other times its just not worth it.

3. No System or Routine

Alright so you have decluttered your house and for some reason more clutter just always piles up. Unfortunately, one massive declutter will not prevent a mess. Everyday routines and habits are vital to the upkeep of a tidy home.

Setting expectations not only for yourself but the people you live with is so important for a tidy room. Having a set tidying routine could be the difference between a space you love and a space you tolerate.

4. Too Much Furniture

This is definitely a surprising one for most of us because it seems that extra stuff is always the culprit in a jumbled room. However, if you really think about it furniture is also sometimes “stuff”. If you have a small space filled with furniture that too big or a space with just too much furniture it could be the cause of a cluttered space. Make sure that your furniture fits in the space and adds to the functionality of the room. Furniture is expensive which makes it harder to part with, but it could make all the difference.

I hope this article gave some useful tips for decluttering. When its our own home its hard to look at it objectively because almost everything has a memory tied to it. Noting these small human tendencies could really transform a space!
