Finding Your Decorating Style Without Adding Clutter

choose you space wisely

Style is the way we express ourselves to the world. However, crafting personal taste does not come naturally to everybody. Taking the time to notice the ways in which you prefer your home function is so important. Following the colors, textures, scents, and design of a space can add in a little of your personality to the place you’ll spend the most time in.

Sorting out your own style can often feel pressurized especially if you are moving into a new space. Hope fully with these four tips you will see that slow and steady win the race when it comes to decorating your home without adding clutter.

1. Give Yourself the Gift of Time

The most common mistake when moving to a brand-new space is buying everything in the first month (or week). The world tells us we need to fill up empty space as soon as we can, in order to feel settled. While yes, getting your home in order is the perfect way to feel more at home, if you are starting from scratch, its best to have patience.

Give yourself the time and space to feel out what you like before you purchase. If you go slow, you can carefully pick each item when it feels right and when you have had a little time to create a vision for how you want each room to feel. Purchasing things too fast can lead to unwanted clutter.

2. Notice the Trends & Back Away

Trendy decorating styles come in and out of fashion with light speed in these days. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying a trend, spend some time with it to make sure it will pass the test of time. Will this trend still be something I’ll enjoy in two months, two years or ten?

Especially if you are buying furniture, it might be better to stick to something more classic in style that will withstand the coming and going of trends. Also follow your heart! If you know that you will love a piece of furniture or décor for years to come listen to those instincts.

4. Start Small & With the Senses

When you are trying to fill up an empty space it can be best to start with filling up the senses.

Maybe you have a completely blank living space but if you pop on your favorite song and enlist some good lighting any space can be salvaged.

Start by trying to fill up your space with good memories and good food that way your life will help influence how you will design the space.

4. Start With What You Need

It can be really easy to over purchase when you are trying to “decorate”. However, this does not mean you have to go out and buy random items in the home décor isle. Start by listing the actual things you need. Try to notice how you can make the items on the basic necessity list cohesive instead of reaching right for the extras at the get-go.

Hopefully this list gave you an idea of how to go about setting up your space without adding too much future clutter. Moving to a space that is entirely your own can be overwhelming so try not to stress out about “completing” it right away. Settle in and soon it will come to you.
