Decorating with Plants for Beginners
Bring the outside, in.
I feel envious every time I walk past a furniture store. The display is always perfectly decorated with art, throw pillows, blankets, textiles, candles and – last but not least – plants. They add a certain feeling and coziness to any space.
Most of the time to beginners, like me, plants feel more like a hassle and unnecessary responsibility. However, the benefit of having plants in your home far outweighs the perceived work that goes into them. Real plants inside a home can actually increase air quality and reduce stress levels. There are also studies that say houseplants can boost productivity and help ill patients heal faster!
So, what are you waiting for? Let’s talk about decorating with plants!
1. Consider the Plant
If you are new to plant parenthood, I suggest you do some research first. Find out what type of you can personally manage and accommodate. For example, if you have a busy job that requires a lot of travel you might not want to invest in a fickle and needy plant.
Also, when going to decorate your room notice how much light a certain area gets versus another. This is a fast way to figure out the optimum placement in a decorating scheme.
2. Don't Just Stick to the Living Room
Many people just stick to the living room area when they are decorating with plants. I challenge you to look elsewhere!
A plant in an office or a bedroom could provide some nice green energy to the space. Get creative with placement.
3. Play with Size
When it comes to plants you really have a large range of sizes to choose from. You can get a really little, tiny plant or one the size of a floor lamp. Don’t be afraid to try things out. Maybe you want to start with little plants and work your way up to the big ones.
Just like decorating with art playing with shape and size in a decorating sense can help a space really pop. Layering different size plants will make your space feel polished and cool.
4. Get Playful with Pots
Once you have your plants picked out make sure to have some fun with their pot. You can opt for a fun pattern or design that goes with the room or even a hanging basket. Use your creativity to find accents that will help the room really pop.
Consider grouping some plants together on a windowsill or even on a roll away cart. Little succulent son bookshelves can be a nice eye break for your space.
5. Go Fake!
And at the end of the day you really can’t deal with plants… go fake. A fake plant can still add that green effect to a room without the responsibility. No one will know…
I hope this article gave you some confidence to start on a plant parenthood journey. Green space in the home is highly beneficial especially if you live in a big city or urban area. Happy planting!
