Beginner Tips for Decorating with Art

Be Creative, Be-E Creative!

Curating an art collection for your home is a personal endeavor. Homogenizing a décor style while still reflecting good vibes and personality is a daunting task. Patience with yourself and the facts behind good design techniques will be the key to unlocking a well decorated home.

Wall art and photos should inject color, texture, and positive memories into the walls of your space. This is an opportunity to display your inner creativity and it should be fun!

Here are four tips for beginners:

Know Your Style

Acknowledge the style and features of your living space. Does it read modern? Traditional? Bohemian? Minimalistic?

While these characteristics shouldn’t undermine your own style, noting the bones of the space can inform some choices.

Next look at what you already own. What sorts of colors are you drawn to? What patterns or textures make you happy? Do you like photos, paintings, or drawings? What décor do you already own? What is your ideal color palette? Understanding these basics will help in the coming steps.

Choose Wisely...

Because the world is incredibly interconnected, due to the internet, it can be extremely easy to buy now and think later. I urge you to be picky in this process and don’t buy the first thing you see.

Shop around for local artists or even local artists online. Many smaller businesses are taking to Instagram or Etsy to sell their work. Choosing pieces that not only look aesthetically pleasing but also have a feeling or memory attached could be a good option.

Art can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Look into buying prints or hanging personal photos.

Lastly don’t forget to think about your frame. It’s almost as important as the art itself.

Choose Your Alignment

There are so many creative ways to hang your wall décor. Gallery walls and quirky alignments are a great way to display tricky art.

Pinterest and design websites have detailed inspiration blogs to spark your imagination. Spend some time researching the different styles amd layouts.

Once you have an idea and some frames always lay it out before you hang anything. Either tape dimensions to your wall or lay out frames on the floor. Make sure your choices fit the space you are trying to put them in. Poorly sized art for a wall is one of the biggest mistakes.

Be Creative

While there are design rules that can guide you a lot of the times you can play! Think about what you already own. Specific textiles, cherished possessions and photographs are a wonderful thing to display on a wall.

Layering different colored frames, playing with complimentary colors and symmetry is a unique path you could take. Notice your options are don’t get stuck on what you think looks correct.

Hanging art is complex and imaginative. Try to have fun and be patient in the process. When you have a home with blank empty walls it can be a natural urge to want to fill it immediately. Try to curate a collection in your home that means something even if it takes a long time.
