10 Concrete Reasons to Declutter an Item

keep what sparks joy

Because we wrap up so many emotions into our clothes, decluttering a personal closet can be confusing. Focusing on the items that spark joy to determine what to keep and what to declutter works wonderfully. However, a more stringent criteria can also work for those of us who have a hard time letting go.

Whether we feel guilt over money or a sentimental attachment, its best to recognize those emotions and realize that they are not solved by keeping clutter. Here are ten concrete reasons to declutter an item from your closet:

It doesn’t fit

Try it on and be honest with yourself. If it fits a little off in one section or clings oddly in another just let it go. Think about your pieces that fit impeccably and realize the extra space you’ll be offering them in your closet. Always consider alterations but if its too far gone thank your item and send it on its way.

It doesn’t fit your style

We can outgrow trends and changed our personal tastes as we go through life. If it doesn’t fit with your tastes anymore its time to let it go.

You never reach for it

Maybe an item fits and seems to fit your style but something is just a little off. If you always reach for something else instead of another item it just makes sense to declutter it.

It has a stain or a rip

Try to fix it but beyond that its time to remove it from your life.

It doesn’t make you feel good to wear it

Whether an item is physically uncomfortable or makes you feel bad about your appearance its not worth hanging onto to.

You’re only keeping it because it was a gift

Gift guilt is real, and this is your sign that its okay to declutter them.

You’re only keeping it for sentimental value

Holding onto our old prom dresses or childhood items can be nice but if they are taking up too much space it might be time to consider decluttering them.

You have duplicates but only ever use one

If the space in your closet is more valuable than the item itself just let it go.

It’s fairly new but you don’t wear it

Money guilt is a large factor to hanging onto things we don’t use or want anymore. Try to sell the item if you can, otherwise don’t worry about the value and takes back the space it takes up.

You have the space for it

Just because you have storage space doesn’t mean you have to use it! Let that on sink in because it’s a hard pill to swallow.

Rethinking our value in the items we keep in our lives is important in the decluttering process. Its important to remember that our things do not define who we are, but they can rule our life if we are not careful. Simplifying our closets can be the key to sparking joy in the outfits we wear and making space for that to happen.
