5 Ways to Become Organized as a Naturally Messy Person

new habits – new you

Being an organized person seems to be a gene inherited from our parents. Whether the art of organizing is  nature versus nature or completely random, there is one thing I am certain of…everyone can learn to love organizing!

Organizing your space and keeping it tidy is a beautiful way to care for your wellbeing. A cared for space is a space that is enjoyed and earned. Getting started in the art of a tidy home may be daunting for beginners but these five tips will show you that it starts with small steps!

1. Start with the Spaces You Use the Most

Starting is often the hardest part when establishing healthy habits. The best way to start is to just jump in headfirst. I challenge you to do the following:

Notice the space you are in right now.

Is there any way you can leave it tidier than before you came to it?

Practice noticing the small details of a room and how it can be put back to its original state. If the room started off as a mess maybe just choose two things to tidy it up just a little bit. This small habit will set you in the right direction.

2. Make it Fun/Rewarding

For most highly organized people one of the most soothing parts of their day is making sure their space is tidy. They will put on a good show or their favorite playlist and go-to-town. It won’t take them long and by the end of that few minutes they have a highly enjoyable space and a sense of accomplishment.

Transform the process of cleaning into a habit that is rewarding and relaxing. Once your space is clean, take some time to enjoy it! This will reframe the way you think about tidying up.

3. Create Good Habits

The first two points of this article are focused on getting started. The long-term upkeep of these goals is simply building good habits.

This can be done by incorporating little tasks into your day. It could something as simple as putting away your dish right after you eat or writing a small to-do list in the morning.

Craft your habits around your life and your unique tendencies, that way they are a little easier to establish.

4. Pace Your Mental Energy

For some people taking the time to write out a detailed weekly cleaning schedule is their perfect medicine. However, for some, that extra step will deter them from even starting. Find the right balance for your life and personality.

If you are more of a spontaneous cleaner incorporate that into your week and make a habit of using those random bursts of energy to tidy instead of doing something else. Follow a system that works for you!

5. Focus on the Big Picture

Getting stuck on the smaller details of a space might deter a naturally messier person to just give up on tidying. For highly organized individuals they may have label makers and specific bins for each tiny product in their pantry. If you do not have the patience for this do not worry (everyone is different)! Start with simple organizing tactics, like hooks for jackets or towels and a big basket for all of those shoes lying around.

I hope this article helped you see the flexibility in becoming an organized individual. It starts with small habits and our daily life.
