Practical Ways to Let Your Living Room Breathe
deep breaths
Depending on your home the living room is often the first thing that guests see when they come to visit. That’s most of our thoughts…isn’t it?
However, letting your living room breathe from the clutter will also let you breathe. Coming home to a tidy space will let you enjoy your home again, instead of being reminded of everything on your to-do list. Especially if you live in a small space, it is important to make sure that your living room is a happy place. Eventually if it is left a mess it can wear on your mental stress and push you out of the space entirely.
Here are five practical ways to let your living room breathe:
1. What is stacking up?
The living room can often become a catch all for chores, old habits and even a museum of the past. A couple easy ways to start:
Kids toys
If you have kids, this one is tricky. Try to incentivise clean up time for your little ones. Teaching them the value of a tidy space will be a rewarding skill they can bring into their lives. Also having catch-all cabinets or bins can be a simple solution.
Get rid of old magazines/newspapers
Are you really going to catch up on all those New Yorkers? If not its time to let go and move the stack elsewhere.
DVDs and CD’s
Holding onto your favorite albums or movies from your youth is fun! However, going through the collection every once in a while, could help you weed some copies out. Maybe hold on to your favorites but let the rest of them go. Everything can be streamed nowadays so if they are not sparking joy, it might be time to say goodbye.
Excess pillows and blankets
Sometimes…. you can have too many throw pillows. There I said it.
2. Check the size of your furniture
Especially if you live in an apartment or condo make sure your furniture actually fits. Would downsizing your couch allow you more space to live? Food for thought.
3. Have a place for everything
Always searching for the remote can be quite a pain after a while.
Try designating a little basket for the remotes or controllers for your television.
You can also do this with any throw blankets that seem to always be laying about.
4. Keep it clean
Fresh smells
Having a clean and fresh smelling living room can open it up. Making sure to dust those shelves, wipe down the television, clean the windows or fluff those pillows will make all the difference.
Letting in some air
Especially with the spring season upon up us, let in the fresh air. Fly those windows open and literally let the outside in.
Letting the laundry and chores live elsewhere
Piles of laundry, kids’ sports equipment, unfinished projects all deserve space in your life but not your living room. Coming home to everything you haven’t finished is no way to live. Put those projects out of sight and instead just keep them on the to-do list.
