How to Travel Like a Minimalist

Many of us share the true struggle of an overflowing closet and looming unpacked suitcase. With a trip on the horizon the big question is always: how much can I pack into this bag? While we might hate to admit it, many people struggle with overpacking for a vacation. Whether you are traveling to a tropical destination, the peaks of mountains, or quaint cities on the coast these ideas might just help you pack like a minimalist.

Tip 01: Only Bring a Carry On

This tip forces you to make tough decision. Limited space in a carry-on bag can prompt you to leaving extras behind. Also, when you are traveling by plane this will simplify your airport experience. When the plane lands, grab your bag and simply head on your way, no pesky wait times for luggage carriers.

Tip 02: Make a List, Cross Things Off

Making a list is a very simple action but most of the time we forget to cross things off. Write down every item you think you need, sit on it for a day and revisit it. You just might  find a few things on that list that can stay home. Actively writing it out can help you sort your thoughts especially if you are going on a trip that requires niche items.

Tip 03: Invest in Versatile Clothing

Many minimalists focus on items of clothing that work well for them and ignore extraneous pieces. While your flare for fashion fits in your closet at home, it might not make into a suitcase. Focus on packing versatile clothing items like basic sweaters, pants, and jeans. Bring a couple of those fun items but your focus should be bringing pieces that easily fit into another outfit and maybe even work from day to night.

Tip 04: Re-evaluate Your Makeup Bag

Makeup and skincare routines these days can have eight different steps. Consider leaving five of those at home. Simplify your routine to the basics that make you feel really good about yourself. The rest can wait until your trip is over. While you may think you need three different eye shadow palettes to achieve the look your going for, chances are one will suffice and the other two will be forgotten.

Tip 05: Plan Ahead

Look ahead to your trip and map out your itinerary. Whether you’re visiting family for the holidays or taking a spontaneous getaway, it is always good to consider what that trip is going to look like. Even if it is a simple sketch on paper it will allow you to pack the things you really need.

While many of us may be shying away from spontaneous getaways this summer, it is still nice to dream. Whether you do or don’t take a trip this summer I hope these tips will give you some future inspiration!
